STRAND: INSTRUMENTS

SUB-STRAND: PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS.

A modern drum

A xylophone

A kayamba

A toumbrine

Look at the pictures above.

1. Have you ever seen them?
2. Where did you see them?
3. How are they played?
Percussion instruments are those music accompaniments that are played by:
   1. Hitting with something e.g drums, xylophone, marimba, karing'aring'a.
   2. Shaking e.g toumbrine, kayamba, manyanga, jingles, handbells etc
The first two above are played by hitting and the second are played by shaking.
Diiferent Kenyan communities have different local names for these instrument. For example musical drums have different names in different parts of Kenya.

ACTIVITY : MAKING A PERCUSSION INSTRUMENT AT HOME.
>Take four glasses of same size or four soda bottles.
>Arrange them in one line with spaces in between.
>Fill them with water at different levels, the first one with water near full and the last bottle near empty.
>Label the bottles : A, B, C, D. from the first to the last.
>Take a small metal bar like a nail or a spoon.
>Hit the side of each bottle and note the sound produced by each bottle.

QUESTIONS
1. Which bottle or glass is producing the lowest sound?


2. Which bottle or glass is producing the highest sound?

3. If you pour down some water from bottle/glass  A and then you hit it, the sound__

4. Add some more water to bottle/glass D. What happens to the sound?

5. Which of the four bottles A, B, C, D would most likely present the voice of a man?
