POPULATION DISTRIBUTION IN EASTERN AFRICA.

Population- Is the number of people living in a given place.

  • Population density is the number of people living in a square kilometer
  • Examples of density populated areas are;

The population of an area/country is realized through an official counting of people called Census

1.The highland Example Ethiopia, Mau and Aberdares.

2.The lake basin of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

3.The coastal lowlands of Tanzania and Kenya

  1. Major cities due to economic reasons.
  • Some areas a have moderate population densities.
  • The Sparsely populated areas of Eastern African due to inadequate rainfall.
  • Examples of Sparsely populated areas includes;
  • Lowlands of Northern and North Eastern Kenya.
  • North Eastern Uganda.
  • Central & Northern Tanzania.
  • Southern and Western Ethiopia.
  • Eastern,Western & south Sudan.
  • Large parts of Eritrea and Djibouti
  • The flood plains like the Sudd in Sudan
  • The mountains tops and steep slopes.

Factors Influencing Population Distribution in Eastern African.

These factors includes the following;

  • -Climate
  • -Relief
  • -Drainage
  • -Economic Activities
  • -Soils
  • Government policy
  • -Security.

a)Climate

  • Is an area with favorable conditions like reliable and adequate rainfall attract huge population.
  • These areas are productive in agriculture.
  • An areas experiencing inadequate and unreliable rainfall are sparsely populated.

 

 

Examples of these areas are;

-Northern Kenya

-Northern Sudan

-Southern Ethiopia

-The whole of Somalia

This is the highness and the lowness of the land.

Windward sides that experience a lot of rainfall attract huge population.

The leeward sides of mountains have less settlement than windward side.

Areas near swamps have less people due to harbor mosquitoes that transmit malaria.

Lowland and plains areas are sparsely populated as they flood during heavy  rains.
