THE CLAN SYSTEM

A Clan is a group of people who have a common ancestor.
Formation of a clan.
A clan is formed in the following ways:Clan members are related by blood
A clan shares common ancestors
In Kenya, clans were founded by males therefore given male names.
A clan increases in size through marriage and naming
Heads of different clans formed traditional governments
Members of the same clan were not allowed to marry. It was a taboo.
Functions of a Clan
- Clan elders to settle disputes among members
- The clan owned land on behalf of its members.
- It boosted unity among its members
- Among the pastoral communities, it controlled grazing land.
- Members of a clan assisted each other in time of need.
- Clan elders kept the law that governed land
- Clans created a sense of belonging to its members.
