Read the passage ‘THE COCONUT TREE’ Primary English pupils’ book 7.
Pages 98-100.Find out the meaning of the following words as used in the passage.
Distance, Copra, pea, breakdown, fibre, margarine, breeze, log, pepper, frond, delicious, saucepan, actually, beef, simmer, grate/grater, stock, tender, flesh, cube, slice, puree.
- Language use:
- Use of both……………. and both of both……………..and.
Both Is followed by a noun and another noun.
Example:
Both Rotino and Sentarua are in class seven. Rotino and Sentarua are both nouns (proper nouns)
Other examples:
-Both Mr. Kulima and his wife harvested honey.
- Both Kipesa and I are large scale farmers.
Note: Sometimes a noun can be represented by a pronoun. A pronoun is a word that stands for a noun. E. g I, he, she it.
Both of:
‘Both of’ is followed by pronouns. (us, you or them)
Examples:
-Both of them are in class seven.
-Both of them are subsistence farmers.
-Both of us got a bumper harvest.
-Both of you are hardworking learners.
-Both of us won a price during the competition.
Both of you are experienced farmers.
-Both of them know when to cultivate the land.
Auxillary verbs:
The verb ‘be’(am, is, are, was, were ) ‘have’ and ‘do’ when used with ordinary verbs to make tenses, passive forms, questions and negatives are called auxiliary verbs or auxiliaries.
(Auxiliary= helping)
Main helping verbs: be, have, do.
Examples:
-He is working.
-I was writing.
- He has worked.
- He has been working.
- They don’t have to go.
- Does he work?
- He didn’t work.
- Have you heard of coconut oil?
- Yes, I have heard of coconut oil.
